Field Notes: Cultural Capital

Cultural capital is the accumulated legitimacy that allows someone or something to move through influential spaces without needing justification.

It is produced through proximity to taste-making institutions, editorial endorsement, and symbolic placement rather than solely through popularity. Cultural capital compounds slowly and is often invisible until it is challenged.

Within this Index, cultural capital is understood as infrastructure, not visibility. It determines who is taken seriously before they speak.
